The Da Vinci Code / The Holy Grail and the Holy Blood

The Da Vinci Code is a mystery/detective novel by American author Dan Brown, published in 2003 by Doubleday Fiction. It is a worldwide bestseller with more than 60.5 million copies in print (as of May 2006) and has been translated into 44 languages. Combining the detective, thriller and conspiracy fiction genres, the book is part two of a trilogy that started with Brown's 2000 novel Angels and Demons, which introduced the character Robert Langdon. In November 2004, Random House published a "Special Illustrated Edition", with 160 illustrations interspersed with the text.
The plot of the novel involves a conspiracy by the Catholic Church to cover up the "true" story of Jesus. In the book, the Vatican knows it is living a lie but continues to do so to keep itself in power. The novel has helped generate popular interest in speculation concerning the Holy Grail legend and the role of Mary Magdalene in the history of Christianity. Fans have lauded the book as creative, action-packed and thought-provoking. Critics have attacked it as poorly written, inaccurate and creating confusion between speculation and fact. From a religious point of view, some critics consider it sacrilegious, and decry the many negative implications about the Catholic Church and Opus Dei.
Dan Brown's novel was a smash hit in 2003, even rivaling the sales of the highly popular Harry Potter series. [citation needed] It spawned a number of offspring books and drew glowing reviews from the New York Times, People Magazine and the Washington Post [1]. It also re-ignited interest in the history of the Catholic Church. As well as re-invigorating interest in the church, The Da Vinci Code has also spawned numerous "knockoffs" (as they are referred to by Publishers Weekly) [2], or novels that have a striking resemblance to The Da Vinci Code, including Raymond Khoury's The Last Templar, and The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry.
Sony's Columbia Pictures has adapted the novel to film, with a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman, and Academy Award winner Ron Howard directing. The film was released on May 18, 2006, and stars Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu, and Sir Ian McKellen as Leigh Teabing. The Da Vinci Code has also inspired webquests.

The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (retitled Holy Blood, Holy Grail in the United States) is a controversial book by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln, which was based in large part on Pierre Plantard's Priory of Sion secret society.
The book was first published in 1982 by Jonathan Cape in London. The book was a follow up of a BBC TV documentary. There was a sequel to the book called The Messianic Legacy, in 1987. It was reissued in an illustrated hardcover version in 2005. One of the books, according to the authors, which influenced the project was L'Or de Rennes (later re-published as Le Trésor Maudit), a 1967 book by Gérard de Sède.
In summary, the authors argue that there is evidence that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, had one or more children, and that those children or their descendents emigrated to what is now southern France. Once there, they intermarried with the noble families that would eventually become the Merovingian dynasty, which is championed today by a secret society called the Priory of Sion.
An international bestseller upon its release, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail spurred interest in a number of ideas related to its central thesis. Response from mainstream historians and academics, however, was nearly universally negative. Critics argued that the bulk of the claims, ancient mysteries and conspiracy theories presented as fact, are pseudohistorical.

Barrera vs Juarez : Pathetic Decision

Juarez said “I was disappointed by the fact that I received a draw, but I was willing to accept a draw. When they told me that they changed the decision and that I lost the fight, I was very disappointed. I felt it was a good fight. I believe I am the champion. I would love a rematch.”

Juarez then asked the crowd who they thought won the fight. When the crowd overwhelmingly and jubilantly responded that they thought Juarez won the fight, the press conference was seemingly cut short, as De La Hoya intervened and thanked the fighters and everyone in attendance.

Overall, the sentiment of the crowd seemed to be that Juarez had been deprived of a close but hard fought victory over the immensely popular Barrera. It just made matters worse that there was a problem with the scoring and that even the tabulation sheet prepared by the Commission seemed to have possibly first had the fight a draw and then after numerous revisions, a split decision was the final outcome. Juarez, despite his official loss in the ring, saw his stock rise considerably while questions will be asked as to whether Barrera is still the feared and formidable champion he once was. Rosario Dawson

It was a one-two encounter between Axl Rose and Tommy Hilfiger. The rocker and designer capped a Thursday evening out at a new club called The Plumm in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood with midnight fisticuffs.

According to the 44-year-old singer, Hilfiger, 55, smacked him in the arm and told him to put the drink back.

"He just kept smacking me," Rose said.

Attempts to reach Hilfiger or a representative were not immediately successful.

Rose was there to play a surprise set for "Rent" actress Rosario Dawson for her 27th birthday party.

At the time of the dustup, The Plumm was packed with a celebrity crowd including Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke, Kid Rock, Peter Beard, Molly Simms, Wentworth Miller, Ann Dexter Jones, Lydia Hearst and Damon Dash. Read more

Flying Car Caught on Camera

Flying car captured on Google Earth

Here's a question for you: what have the Nazi wartime test facility at Peenemunde and the Australian city of Perth got in common? Well, the first thing (and just about the only thing, truth be told) which springs to mind is that they are both next to large bodies of water. This is useful if you're going to test things which might go bang. Like V-2 rockets and - wait for it - flying cars:

According to Oz photo interpretation bureau (Clinton Bird), the vehicle in question is at an altitude of three of four metres and doing about 80 knots. Which rules out a rocket-powered project, and we can see no evidence of the Wankel-powered turbofan outrigger engines favoured by the Moller Corporation: .

Believe it!

Largest Ferris Wheel - Guinness

China is reaching for the stars with the opening of what it says it the world's tallest Ferris wheel in the country's south.

The 525-foot-high Star of Nanchang opened in early May in a riverside park in Jiangxi province.

The wheel is a full 82 feet taller than the London Eye on the banks of the River Thames in London which, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is the current record-holder.

The ride is lit up with fluorescent red and blue lights. A full rotation of the wheel takes about 30 minutes.

David Blaine Failed to beat World Record

Blaine was trying to free himself from chains and handcuffs while bidding to break the world record for holding one's breath under water of 8 minutes, 58 seconds. The stunt, following a weeklong endurance challenge under water, was televised live by ABC.

With Blaine's face contorted in pain and bubbles coming up to the surface, divers went in to release him from the chains and pull him out. Blaine held his breath for 7:08.

"He is pushing his body insanely to the limits," said Dr. Murat Gunel, who heads Blaine's medical team and is associate professor of neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine, before the attempt.

Gunel and other medical experts had been monitoring Blaine's condition 24 hours a day from an adjacent tent filled with medical equipment and machines.

Large crowds gathered all day Monday for a closer look at the man submerged in the 8-foot snow globe-like tank on the plaza of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Gunel said the challenge had taken a toll on the magician's body, including liver damage, pins and needles in his feet and hands, some loss of sensation and rashes all over his body, which glistened pale white.

On Sunday, Blaine, 33, wearing a diver's helmet with a two-way communication system, told AP Television News he would "give it my best shot" to complete the feat despite peeling skin, sharp pains in his joints and a severe earache.

The stunt artist planned to put on chains and handcuffs, remove his oxygen tube and then escape while holding his breath longer than anyone else has.

Kirk Krack, the magician's trainer and diving expert, said if there were any release of bubbles during the feat — a clear sign Blaine was going unconscious — divers would immediately jump into the tank. While one diver pinched Blaine's nose and closed his mouth to prevent him from swallowing water, which could be fatal, another diver freed him from the chains and brought him to the surface.   Read More
